15 Best Fantasy Anime With an OP MC

Who doesn’t love a charming & OP MC in a fantasy anime? Because I sure do!

You might have noticed that the isekai genre is filled with overpowered characters. However, not all isekai are created equal. And since I wanted to look at other options too I decided to go against the grain and researched the whole fantasy genre to find the best picks.

I did not include supernatural anime, though since that is usually not leaned towards action and adventures as much as purely fantasy series.

Below is a carefully curated list of the top 15 fantasy anime series with an OP MC.

15. The World’s Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in a Different World as an Aristocrat

An old man who is known as the world’s greatest assassin dies and is reincarnated in a world of swords and magic where his skill set is needed to prevent the destruction of the world.

As you can imagine, this isekai is special compared to normal isekai.

Lugh—the protagonist—is overpowered but it’s mainly due to his previous life experiences. After he is reincarnated in the body of a newborn baby, he undergoes intense training from early childhood and becomes extraordinarily skilled in various assassin and magic techniques. Combined with his sharp wit it makes him deadly to any enemy.

14. A Certain Scientific Accelerator

Accelerator is a bae

A spin-off series of A Certain Magical Index is another fantasy anime with an OP MC, Accelerator.

The dark side of Academy City never rests and Accelerator, the strongest esper of the Academy City is unwillingly caught in the middle of a new conflict.

The self-proclaimed villain with style has to stop evil and protect what he holds dear once more.

Accelerator might be one of the most powerful characters in general, not just within Toaru Universe.

He is the strongest of the few Level 5 Espers in Academy City. Only 7 people out of 2,3 million achieved this level.

To demonstrate how powerful Accelerator is, let me show you some examples. When he fought a rank 3 Level 5 Esper, she was utterly powerless against him. After he met rank 2 Level 5 Esper, that one also ended up beaten to a pulp in a matter of minutes.

It’s not only his abilities that make him so OP—it’s true that he can freely manipulate every vector there is, but he also has a very high IQ and an incredible calculative ability which even enhances his vector manipulation and makes him understand unknown principles and mechanisms quickly.

He also reverses any and all force within a few millimeters of his body that he hasn’t chosen to ignore.

13. Redo of Healer

This infamous Redo of Healer follows Keyaru, a healing magician who is endlessly exploited against his will by his “allies”.

After years he realizes the potential of healing magic and uses it on the world itself to go back four years into the past in order to redo everything and get sweet revenge.

Keyaru proves that the healing class can be used for other purposes than healing. I mean, he can literally manipulate time and matter, destroy the target from inside by corrupting them, or simply acquire the fighting skills and experience from people he healed. Simply OP.

12. Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest

Arifureta is a similar anime to Redo of Healer minus the extreme messed-up parts. It’s a fantasy harem anime series with an OP MC and many beautiful women.

This typical underdog anime tells the story of Hajime Nagumo, an ordinary 17-year-old otaku who gets summoned to a fantasy world along with his classmates. They are tasked with saving mankind and all except him are gifted with powerful abilities.

Unfortunately for Hajime, his classmate betrays him while on an expedition and he ends up barely surviving the fall to a deep abyss where all kinds of monstrous creatures reside.

Desperate to survive he does not give in and after surviving long enough on his own he eventually bumps into Yue, an imprisoned vampire, and a bunch of others who are also trying to escape the labyrinth.

Hajime becomes his journey to the strongest in the abyss and it all starts with consuming monster meat, which made him not only stronger but also a hybrid. He now boasts enormous strength, speed, durability, and endurance. On top of that, he also possesses a genius intellect.

11. Problem children are coming from another world, aren’t they?

Three extraordinary high schoolers gifted with psychic powers get unexpectedly and forcefully transported to an alternate world known as Little Garden. There, all sorts of beings participate in high-stakes games using their special abilities.

One of those super gifted high schoolers is Izayoi Sakamaki. Being unmatched in the original world caused him to be bored most of the time, so being isekai’d was a good thing for him.

We see from the start that he is incredibly powerful, having immense strength, inhuman speed, increased perception, and also the ability to destroy and cancel other people’s powers. Clearly OP.

10. The Misfit of Demon King Academy

The Misfit of Demon King Academy follows Anos, the Demon King of Tyranny, who has defeated humans, elementals, spirits, gods, and fought countless wars. Tired of all the fighting, he decides to sacrifice his own life in hopes to see a more peaceful world.

2000 years later he reincarnates only to find out that the world has become too peaceful and his descendants have grown really weak.

Anos is one of the characters that are considered stupidly overpowered. All attacks against him are futile because of his unmatched magical power, strength, and agility. And it only plays to his advantage that others tend to underestimate him.

9. How Not to Summon a Demon Lord

Takuma Sakamoto is a shut-in gamer who is unmatched in an MMORPG game called Cross Reverie, having a gaming identity of the Demon King Diablo.

One day, he ends up summoned to a fantasy world with the appearance of the Demon King from Cross Reverie. The two beautiful ladies who summoned him try to perform an Enslavement Ritual that backfires and the two become his slaves instead. After getting to know them a little, he decides to accompany them on a journey to unbind the slave contract.

Being the true Demon Lord and a level 150 Sorcerer, there is a lot he can do and almost nothing he can’t do.

Diablo is absolutely overpowered and unrivaled, which also draws beautiful ladies to him.

8. Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation

A fairly new isekai called Mushoku Tensei is about a hopeless 34-year-old NEET who gets killed during a traffic accident and reincarnates in a fantasy world while keeping his memories and intellect intact. It’s a fantasy anime that is well-known for having an OP MC.

His name is Rudeus and we see first meet him as a small child. He has an unparalleled magical talent that was further advanced by vigorous training from an early age.

Rudeus is one of the few people capable of using a voiceless incantation and most of the spells he uses a lot have an Emperor-class level of power (rank 6 out of 7 ranks).

He eventually becomes one of the seven world powers, so the majority of other inhabitants of the world are small fries compared to him.

7. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

The series tells the story of an average 37-year-old corporate worker who dies after being stabbed to death by a passing robber and reincarnates as a genderless slime in a fantasy world.

While slimes are supposed to be the weakest monsters, Rimuru Tempest, the protagonist of the series is easily one of the most powerful characters in the series thanks to the unique ability called “Predator”. This ability contains five effects, the most notable ones being the analysis of anything he consumes and consequential replication of the appearance and abilities he acquired from the analysis.

6. The Rising Of The Shield Hero

Naofumi Iwatani, an ordinary Japanese boy, gets summoned to an alternate world as a “Shield Hero”, the weakest out of the four summoned heroes. Their sole purpose in this world is to fight inter-dimensional hordes of monsters called Waves.

Unfortunately, not all that glitters is gold. Not only is his equipment the weakest, but he also gets betrayed by the sole companion that agreed to follow him on his journey. The future looks grim until he stumbles upon a tanuki demi-human girl and a mysterious egg that later hatches into a bird-like creature.

Naofumi doesn’t start off as an overpowered character. He appears to be the weakest but quickly advances and becomes the strongest of the summoned heroes thanks to his willpower and wits.

Every weapon (shields included) has a passive bonus you can unlock and Naofumi unlocks tons of +1 and +2 bonuses trying to scrape by while the other heroes jumped to the “good” weapons. The mentioned tiny bonuses eventually piled up and resulted in a real tangible difference in numbers. By receiving such a boost, it’s only natural that he has become OP.

5. Overlord

One of the most popular fantasy anime with an OP MC is Overlord.

The anime follows Momonga, a guy who gets stuck in a virtual reality game called Yggdrasil. With all NPCs suddenly developing personalities on their own, it’s now up to him to conquer this new world.

Ainz (Momonga), the protagonist of Overlord is absolutely god-like in New World. He is a maximum level (100) entity and the most powerful magic caster in the world. He can easily annihilate an entire country with one spell if he wants. Ainz is so maxed out that everyone else seems weak compared to him.

Also, all of the NPCs in his guild are basically demigods compared to the 99% of inhabitants of this world.

4. Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?

DanMachi tells the story of Bell Cranel, a young adventurer who operates under the goddess Hestia. As the only member of Hestia Familia, he works every day endlessly, battling various monsters in dungeons, aiming to improve himself as much as possible and become the greatest adventurer in the land.

This fantasy anime has a classic leveling system, stats, and many unique abilities & skills you can find in MMORPG games.

Bell is gifted with fast growth based on how long his feelings last, which makes him improve incredibly quickly. This skill also allows him to exceed the limit of his abilities, having had stats in the SS and SSS ranks in all his previous levels. Because of this, he has power above his level.

He also quickly boosts his stats, ending up with tremendous agility, dexterity, and strength.

3. Akame ga Kill!

The series starts with Tatsumi, a country boy who along with his friends embarks on a journey to the Capital to find a way how to make money for their poor village. He gets separated from them and even fails to enroll in the Capital army.

He even gets scammed and loses all his money but somehow ends up rescued by a noble family and moves into a castle with them. Later that night, a seemingly dangerous group of assassins known as Night Raid attack the family. It’s then that Tatsumi learns the dark truth about the noble family and their unforgivable crimes. After that, he decides to join Night Raid as a new member in order to fight injustice in the Capital.

The titular heroine, Akame is in my eyes the protagonist of the series along with Tatsumi.

She possesses unmatched reflexes, agility, and speed. Akame also wields a sword coated in poison with no known antidote, so good luck to anyone who is even slightly cut by that monstrous weapon.

1. Sword Art Online

One of the most popular isekai series with more than 2,5 million members on MaL doesn’t need an introduction.

Kirito, the MC of this fantasy anime show is OP right from the start. Sword Art Online follows him on his journey after he is unable to log out from the game, along with 10 000 other players. The creator of the game appears in-game and states that the only way to get out is to beat all 100 floors of Aincrad, an iron-and-stone floating castle that is the setting of SAO. He also says that if they die in-game or someone forcefully removes their NerveGear, they will also die in real life.

Not only is Kirito an insanely skilled gamer, but he also manages to master unimaginable skills in this virtual world that has become his new home.

While others usually advanced in SAO at a much slower pace (or at all), he had the knowledge from the beta version of the game and skill from many games he has played to know precisely how to quickly level up and solo clear the necessary instances in order to acquire the top gear.

At one point, he had a horde of players trying to kill him but his health was regenerating so fast that it seemed like they dealt no damage at all. This was due to the huge level difference between Kirito and other players.

This sharp-witted protagonist is likable, charismatic, and relatable for almost any gamer out there.
