The 10 Best Anime Like Hunter x Hunter

Hunter x Hunter has a special place in my heart. It’s almost ridiculous how I didn’t write “a similar anime like” about this particular anime when this truly is my best, top 1 anime.

Hunter x Hunter has only two downsides: once you finish it, you are going to be frustrated with the never-ending hiatus of the manga and you will end up comparing every shounen to this masterpiece. And it will not compare to it. Like at all.

Hunter x Hunter is a Japanese manga written and illustrated by one and only Yoshihiro Togashi.

The story centers around Gon and his friends, particularly his best friend, Killua, who had used to be a childhood assassin before he took the hunter exam. Both Killua and Gon eventually become licensed Hunters – a title that has its own perks which can help you track beasts, individuals or treasures easily.

The two of them are trying to get stronger and fulfill Gon’s goal to find his father while encountering dangerous enemies and problematic situations.

The manga got adapted into anime and has currently two versions: the 1999 version and the 2011 newer and fancier version. Both are insanely good but obviously, the 2011 one is better (at least in my eyes). Hunter x Hunter has this ability to boost your stats IRL (by that I mean motivation mainly) and is the third top-rated anime show and the second top-rated shounen.

Killua, one of the main characters in HxH, is my ultimate bae and everyone who reads this blog frequently probably already knows it. My name on discord, origin, and also in almost every game is Killua.

If you love Hunter x Hunter as I do, don’t be shy and also check my Pinterest board about Hunter x Hunter. There are a lot of high-quality pins.

10. Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic

  • Genres: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Magic, Shounen
  • Episodes: 25

Why it’s similar

Both series look like happy groovy anime at first but end up having a much deeper and darker story than you would expect. They feature young protagonists (Aladin/ Gon) who have similar personalities and end up setting off on an adventure to find something. During this journey, they end up making new friends and get sidetracked from their original journey.

Dispersed around the world, there are several bizarre labyrinths hiding incredible treasures within them. These mysterious places, known as “Dungeons,” are said to be the work of Magi, a class of rare magicians, who also help people build their empires by guiding them to a dungeon. Djinns, supernatural beings that rule over the labyrinths, grant successful conquerors access to their immense power and choose them as potential king candidates to rule the world.

Having spent life in isolation, Aladdin, a kind and young magician, is eager to explore the world upon finally leaving his home behind. He begins his journey only accompanied by his mentor Ugo—a djinn that Aladdin can summon with his flute. However, Aladdin soon becomes friends with the courageous Alibaba Saluja after causing the destruction of a local merchant’s supply cart. In order to pay for the damages, Alibaba suggests that they attempt to conquer the nearest dungeon, taking the first step in an epic adventure that will decide the fate of the world itself.

9. Black Clover

  • Genres: Action, Comedy, Magic, Fantasy, Shounen
  • Episodes: 121, ongoing

Why it’s similar

Hunter x Hunter and Black Clover are both battle shounen revolving around a journey of an impressively determined boy who has his own goal he is trying to achieve at all costs.

Asta (Black Clover) and Gon (HxH) are a lot alike when it comes to their naivety and kindness, showing mercy even to their enemies.

You can expect to see a lot of unique powers, excellent battles, some comedic and also sad moments.

The anime focuses on Asta, a young orphan who lived in an orphanage from his birth along with his fellow orphan, Yuno. The two consider each other rivals but deeply care for each other and dream of becoming “the Wizard King”, the title awarded to the strongest mage of the Kingdom.

Despite being raised together Yuno wields amazing magic power from a young age whilst Asta is not able to utilize his Mana in the form of Magical Power. The fact that Yuno has such talent and Asta is basically considered “useless” in the all magic word would probably make one give up – but not Asta – he never gives in and follows rough physical training every single day.

Motivated by their mutual desire to become the next Wizard King, they embark on a journey to become Magic Knights.

8. Attack on Titan

  • Genres: Action, Military, Mystery, Super Power, Drama, Fantasy, Shounen
  • Episodes: 25

Why it’s similar

HxH and AOT are both targetting mature audiences because of its dark nature (just look at other shounen anime; they are usually really light-hearted compared to this).

If you enjoyed the Chimera Ant arc in HxH, you will surely like the premise of AOT – people are hiding behind the walls because of monstrous humanoid creatures who are eating people.

Ants were extremely powerful as well, and so it might remind you how powerless hunters felt when facing them. But they did it anyways – same as AOT Scouts, they faced their inner fears and found motivation to fight to preserve humanity.

Eren Yaeger’s life turns upside down after the wall protecting his village from Titans (monstrous humanoid creatures) gets breached, bringing havoc on the whole village behind. He loses a close relative in a very gruesome way and witnesses first hand the atrocious power of Titans.

After this traumatic experience, driven by anger, Eren decides to dedicate his life to the eradication of Titans by enlisting into the Survey Corps, an elite military unit that fights the Titans outside the protection of the remaining walls.

7. Kimetsu no Yaiba

  • Genres: Action, Historical, Demons, Supernatural, Shounen
  • Episodes: 26

Why it’s similar

Kimetsu no Yaiba and Hunter x Hunter are both great and fairly dark battle shounen anime. The main protagonists of these anime are optimists and after they undergo training, they become very strong. They don’t train to become famous but for a greater purpose; they also have a partner who accompanies them during their adventures of searching for something that they need to find.

They both deal with nonhuman creatures who resemble humans (Chimera Ants x Demons).

The story revolves around Tanjirou, a young boy whose soul got scarred by a tragedy – all members of his family except his younger sister, Nezuko, were slaughtered by a demon and she has turned into one.

Tanjirou swears to avenge his family and embarks on a journey to find a way how to turn Nezuko back to a human.

6. Made in Abyss

  • Genres: Sci-Fi, Adventure, Mystery, Drama, Fantasy
  • Episodes: 13

Why it’s similar

Both of these shows are absolutely amazing adventure anime with young, extremely positive, and naive main characters that face a lot of difficulties on their journey to find their lost parent. They are also accompanied by a very loyal friend while exploring the world.

These shows both seem at the beginning fairly light-hearted and progressively become darker as the truth is slowly revealed.

Made in Abyss follows a story of Riko, an adventurous girl determined to find her mother who had descended to the depth of the Abyss to explore ancient relics/ creatures and never came back to the surface.

One fateful day when Riko works in the upper layer of the Abyss she meets a robot boy, names him Reg and the two quickly become an inseparable duo. Reg seems to be equipped with a very powerful technology but has no memory of why he ascended from the depth of the Abyss to the top.

Riko makes up her mind quite quickly and decides to descend to the deepest layer of the abyss with the help Reg whilst risking her own life and experiencing horrific discoveries about the Abyss.

5. Boku no Hero Academia

  • Genres: Comedy, Superpower, Action, School, Shounen
  • Episodes: 13

Why it’s similar

Both of them are extremely popular shounen anime with a lot of action and superpowers. The main protagonists are teenagers who undergo a difficult exam that will determine whether they are fit for being heroes (BHA) x hunters (HxH).

The main protagonist of BHA, Izuku, is very similar to Izuku from BHA. He is striving to become strong, undergoes a lot of training to better himself, and acquires a new superpower that needs to be further mastered.

Boku No Hero Academia follows the story of a young boy called Izuku Midoriya, who is well-known as a boy without the Quirk (a special power which is fairly common). He idolizes and adores pro heroes, extremely strong individuals with the most powerful Quirks who protect the cities and their citizens from villains.

Despite being “useless” and weak, he made a lifechanging decision – he will become a pro hero no matter what.

4. One Piece

  • Genres: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Super Power, Drama, Fantasy, Shounen
  • Episodes: 892, ongoing

Why it’s similar

Except for the fact that they are both adventurous battle shounen with everything that you expect (superpowers, epic fighting scenes, friendships), the main characters are also strikingly similar. Both are innocent and compassionate young boys (typical simpletons), who are determined to reach their dreams and goals.

Gol D. Roger was known as the “Pirate King,” the strongest and most infamous being to have sailed the Grand Line. The capture and execution of Roger by the World Government brought a change throughout the world. His last words before his death revealed the existence of the greatest treasure in the world, One Piece. It was this revelation that brought about the Grand Age of Pirates, men who dreamed of finding One Piece—which promises an unlimited amount of riches and fame—and quite possibly the pinnacle of glory and the title of the Pirate King.

Enter Monkey D. Luffy, a 17-year-old boy who defies your standard definition of a pirate. Rather than the popular persona of a wicked, hardened, toothless pirate ransacking villages for fun, Luffy’s reason for being a pirate is one of pure wonder: the thought of an exciting adventure that leads him to intriguing people and ultimately, the promised treasure. Following in the footsteps of his childhood hero, Luffy and his crew travel across the Grand Line, experiencing crazy adventures, unveiling dark mysteries and battling strong enemies, all in order to reach the most coveted of all fortunes—One Piece.

  • Genres: Action, Comedy, Demons, Supernatural, Martial Arts, Shounen
  • Episodes: 112

Why it’s similar

They are both creations of Yoshihiro Togashi.  They have similar themes, characters, and vibes and are packed with great fights and character development. Yuu Yuu Hakusho also has four main characters with special abilities (they use spiritual power, which will surely remind you of nen).

After Yusuke Urameshi passes away in a car accident, he’s brought back to life under one condition: that he becomes a Spirit Detective. As a Spirit Detective, his job is to solve conflicts between humans and yokai.

2. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

  • Genres: Action, Military, Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Magic, Fantasy, Shounen
  • Episodes: 64

Why it’s similar

Both of these anime are the top 2 best-rated shounen anime of all time; that might give you a hint about how astounding they both are. They are both mature, non-traditional, with a dark but great plot and amazing and relatable characters.

The consistent theme is a friendship/brotherhood (Killua x Gon/ Edward x his brother Al). The battles are not random; they serve a purpose to the series.

Plot Summary

The story centers around an alchemist prodigy, Edward Elric, who is trying to find a way how to restore his brother’s physical body which disappeared after a failed transmutation.

1. Naruto

  • Genres: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Super Power, Martial Arts, Shounen
  • Episodes: 220

Why it’s similar

First of all, both of them are long-run shounen anime with tons of action and meaningful dialogues.

The main protagonists of these series never give up and are trying hard to improve in order to achieve what they want. That results in taking an exam (Hunter exam/Chunin Exam) and becoming a shinobi/hunter. Naruto and HxH are also wonderful thanks to the diverse cast and developed characters; you can relate to villains and to “heroes” equally.

Apart from that, there is also some organized crime group (Phantom Troupe/ Akatsuki). The main protagonists are protecting not only their friends but absolutely everyone because that’s just who they are – kind and empathic young boys.

Plot Summary

The anime is set in the world of ninjas and follows the story of Uzumaki Naruto, a young aspiring ninja who is determined to become a Hokage (basically a leader) of his village to get acknowledged and accepted by others.
