15 Best Anime Characters With Black Eyes

Black is one of my favorite colors. It’s a mystical color that conjures elegance, sophistication, and sexual prowess. Black color is associated with strength, authority, and power. In contrast, the color meaning can also evoke emotions such as sadness and anger. It’s no wonder that fans fall in love with anime characters with black eyes.

Black eyes are quite popular, mainly in shounen. For example, Naruto is very abundant with black eyes. When you look at the whole Uchiha clan, their eyes are black as night, and it’s their trademark along with black hair.

That being said, let’s explore the top 15 anime characters who have black eyes!

15. Tsuyu Asui (My Hero Academia)

It might have crossed your mind that she looks like a frog, right? Well, that’s because her abilities are frog-based. Even though she doesn’t look like much, she is a highly adept student aiming to become a Pro Hero.

A blunt and distant girl, Tsuyu keeps her cool in almost any situation and even makes sure to calm down her comrades if necessary. A perfect teammate to have!

14. Rock Lee (Naruto)

One would think that if your looks aren’t great, you should be at least gifted with some OP jutsu, right? Wrong! However, his attitude and personality still earned him a place among the 15 most popular anime characters with black eyes. 😉

Rock Lee wasn’t born to a prestigious clan, doesn’t look the best, and can’t even perform any genjutsu or ninjutsu techniques. On top of everything, all he had left was taijutsu—the martial arts—and even in that area, he was average at best. Not to mention that 99.9% of people would give up on the dream of becoming a ninja and feel completely defeated. Well, NOT Lee!

Thanks to his passion, hard work, and stubbornness, he was able to become one of the most adept ninjas out there, capable of beating most Naruto characters despite his initial shortcomings.

Also, did you know that the majority of ninjas in Naruto can use no more than 20% of their body’s full potential? These limiters are put in place to limit the harm to the body through overexertion. Getting access to more potential is also referred to as “opening gates” and there are 8 of them. Each of them grants the user access to a bigger pool of chakra, enhancing their physical strength and speed, which is very much needed when battling strong foes if you are a taijutsu-only user. Lee can use all eight gates by adulthood!

13. Obito Uchiha (Naruto)

Obito Uchiha is the first Uchiha on this list who had a tragic past (who doesn’t have a tragic past from the Uchiha clan?).

Anyways, his backstory resonated with fans a lot because his younger version is very similar to Naruto. He was cheerful, optimistic, and kind-hearted as a child. He was often showing up late not because of laziness but because he was performing random good deeds around the village. He even strived to become a Hokage!

Unfortunately, tragic events caused him to hate the whole village and follow the path of revenge. His descent into darkness was furthered by Madara who is mentioned on this list too, by the way.

It’s also no wonder that he is overpowered, let’s not forget that Obito is a member of the legendary Uchiha clan. After he awakened his Mangekyō Sharingan, he was granted the ability called Kamui—a space-time ninjutsu that allows the user to transfer objects to and from another dimension.

12. Shota Aizawa (My Hero Academia)

A November-born teacher of the ambitious students of Class 1-A at U.A. High, Shota Aizawa is a strict and reserved character who gives off cold and apathetic vibes, much to the displeasure of many students.

Despite his unkempt looks, he is known for his notoriously high expectations when it comes to students. To help them overcome their limits, he doesn’t hesitate to put them through vigorous training or push them to their limits. They will thank him later, I guess!

Also, can we adore for a moment that he actually has a tendency to lie inside his sleeping bag randomly to conserve energy? 😀

11. Portgas D. Ace (One Piece)

Ace is easily one of the most popular characters in One Piece. His popularity is on par with characters like Nami, Brook, or Jinbe. He is the sworn brother of Luffy and they grew up together on Mt. Corvo in the Goa Kingdom of the East Blue. Ace is also among the immensely popular anime characters with black eyes.

Ace is a relatable character although a very tragic one. We all fight some inner demons and he represents that and it makes him also very human.

He is handsome, powerful, loyal, and protective. He represents “the big brother” everyone wants to have. How can anyone not like someone like that?

Apart from that, he is the one who made Luffy—the protagonist of the series—the person he is today.

10. Madara Uchiha (Naruto)

One of the most powerful characters in Naruto, Madara is also probably the greatest antagonist of the series.

After his return from death and various enhancements, he was able to decisively defeat thousands of ninjas, the Five Kage, and the nine-tailed beasts, all at one respectively. He is basically a badass OP character. And this confident man takes delight in fighting, which is one of the greatest things about him because it’s so aesthetically pleasing to watch him fight!

By the way, he wanted peace just like Nagato, Konan, or Naruto but his version of the peaceful world was completely different from theirs.

9. Natsu Dragneel (Fairy Tail)

A Fire Dragon Slayer, Natsu is the representation of fiery with his personality as well. Although he can be a bit reckless and hot-headed, he is a good-natured boy who will always try to do the right thing. He is also very protective of his friends and guild members. In fact, he reminds me a lot of Naruto Uzumaki.

Since Fairy Tail is an anime about wizards, Natsu has magic instead of jutsu, which is equally as impressive though. His magic revolves around the usage of fire that can spout from any part of his body. He can spew such powerful fire from his lungs that it can burn even through metal!

8. Son Goku (Dragon Ball)

Goku is a completely selfless, pure-hearted, and caring person. One would almost forget that he is actually from an alien race and his original goal was to destroy all sentient beings on Earth! It’s so lucky that he hit his head which resulted in him getting rid of his initial destructive nature and allowing him to grow up to become one of Earth’s greatest defenders.

Apart from that, he’s the strongest mortal hero in Dragon Ball Z, mastering multiple levels of Super Saiyan.

For people who haven’t seen Dragon Ball, he is like Naruto or Gon, inspiring others to change for the better after they get to know him.

7. Sasuke Uchiha (Naruto)

The second most popular Uchiha character is Sasuke.

While some people find him too edgy for their liking, you have to think about his actions from his perspective. After what he witnessed, it’s only natural that he would seek revenge and behave questionably. It’s logical. Many of us would do the exact same thing.

We first and foremost can’t ignore that he is analytical, intelligent, handsome, and extremely OP, making it a killer combination for any girl in his radius. Sasuke is the definition of cool and the only ninja capable of rivaling Naruto Uzumaki.

6. Roy Mustang (Fullmetal Alchemist)

Roy Mustang is a State Alchemist and officer in the Amestrian State Military.

He comes off as an arrogant and shallow individual who seems to be an incorrigible serial womanizer. This, however, seems to be a deliberate act to perhaps mask his intelligence and aptitude so that others underestimate him. After all, he is a great tactician and manipulator. In reality, Roy has shown us many times that he is a caring and protective man when it comes to his comrades & friends, willing to put himself at risk if it’s to ensure their safety.

Also, calling him OP wouldn’t be farfetched—after all, he probably has the highest body count and combat experience over all the other living characters who use alchemy!

5. Kakashi Hatake (Naruto)

Kakashi is a skilled, well-balanced, and laid-back cool character. He is the embodiment of a proper ninja. Mysterious, a bit aloof, always helpful to his students, and even fighting alongside them in the war. There are legit no reasons to dislike Kakashi.

The thing is, he never went dark side despite enduring a lot of pain. Instead, he learned a valuable lesson that he continues to teach others—to never abandon your friends, no matter what. His most famous quote “In the Ninja World, those who break the rules are scum, that’s true…but those who abandon their friends are worse than scum!” is based on the bitter lesson he learned.

4. Mikasa Ackerman (Attack on Titan)

Mikasa is a loyal companion of Eren, the infamous protagonist of Attack on Titan. You might be wondering why she is on the list of the top anime characters with black eyes since her eye color is inconsistent in the anime. But it seems to be greyish-black and clearly intended to be some shade of black judging by the manga.

They both join the military and become soldiers to fight Titans who endanger the remaining humanity behind the walls. Her motive behind becoming a soldier is, however, completely different from Eren’s. She joined only to keep an eye on Eren because she loves him deeply. Their bond is one of the most fundamental relationships she has, and it defines her the most. She is willing to do anything to protect Eren—often acting recklessly if Eren’s safety is compromised in any way.

Mikasa is not only beautiful but also exceptionally strong, almost on par with the strongest humanity soldier, Levi Ackerman.

Her loyal, supportive, and caring nature are the top reasons why she is one of the best waifus to fall in love with!

3. Itachi Uchiha (Naruto)

Itachi is one of the most selfless characters I have come across. He has always wanted peace for the village where he lived and remained loyal to this idea no matter what (I won’t spoil the events but he proved it more than enough).

Since he is another OP Uchiha, it comes as no surprise that he also awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan as a child. Because of that, he could use Tsukuyomi, a genjutsu that traps opponents’ minds in an illusory world, altering their perception of time, and also Amaterasu, black flames that would burn anything to ashes, including fire. Also, Susanoo, is a humanoid avatar made of the chakra that surrounds him and fights for him.

To top it off, he is known for being incredibly intelligent and resourceful, making him probably one of the top 10 most powerful ninjas in the series. He can hold his own against any opponent with ease, even without using extremely OP abilities.

He appears to be a cold fish most of the time. This, however, is only a façade. The only deadpan feature of Itachi is his humor. Itachi is, in fact, a kind-hearted individual who loves his younger brother a lot. Too bad the execution of his plans literally put his younger brother—among other people—through hell!

2. Luffy D. Monkey (One Piece)

Luffy is the founder and captain of Straw Hat Pirates, which is an infamous and incredibly powerful rising pirate crew.

He is a boy with a big heart, always willing to help people. And that’s one of the reasons why he is the golden boy of the whole One Piece Universe. And also the protagonist of the series.

With that being said, he is also one of the most powerful characters in One Piece.

1. L Lawliet (Death Note)

Who doesn’t love a genius detective with huge dark circles under his eyes? L Lawliet is the most popular among anime characters who have black eyes. His eyes are clearly black as pitch in the manga although they appear to be grey in the anime. Currently, he is #4 in popularity according to MAL with more than 121k people choosing him as their favorite character.

L is a rather eccentric character. He is a private and secretive individual, rarely going out except when he has to because of investigating. This also means that he rarely interacts with other people, which unfortunately resulted in him having very poor social skills. L is often manifesting socially inappropriate habits and behaviors like talking with his mouth full, placing his feet on furniture, or biting his fingernails. None of those are anti-social or harming anyone, though, which just adds more quirkiness to his character.

Another reason why fans love him is that his intelligence is on par with the protagonist’s intelligence, which makes it fun to watch them outsmart each other.

L is by no means a typical hero. When he decides that he wants to catch a murderer, he often resorts to using questionable and even brutal methods to get answers, making him an anti-hero character.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Sai (Naruto)
  • Might Guy (Naruto)
  • Ash Ketchum (Pokémon)
  • Shisui Uchiha (Naruto)
  • Sarada Uchiha (Naruto)
  • Zeref Dragneel (Fairy Tail)
