7. Deadman Wonderland
Ganta Igarashi is a middle schooler who had been living a seemingly ordinary life until one day a man in red appeared during the class and slaughtered all his classmates, leaving only Ganta unharmed.
After the unexpected and disturbing events, Ganta gets wrongfully convicted of the massacre and is sentenced to death in a prison that is themed as an amusement park for the visitors and a nightmare for the prisoners―Deadman Wonderland. He is fitted with a lethal collar which can be slowed down only by winning in dangerous and savage games in which all prisoners participate.
The main characters in these shows are thrown into a completely insane predicament and they also receive special abilities. However, they have to battle others with similar abilities, putting their lives at great risk.
6. Hunter x Hunter
Written by Yoshihiro Togashi, Hunter x Hunter is one of the highest-rated anime of all time. This shounen offers a diverse cast of awesome characters, intense battle scenes, and astounding worldbuilding.
HxH tells the story of Gon and his friends, particularly his best friend Killua who used to be a childhood assassin before he took the hunter exam.
Both Killua and Gon eventually become licensed Hunters. Being licensed as an official Hunter bestows several desirable benefits on the licensee, ranging from the usage of public facilities at no cost to reduced legal responsibility for the murder.
The two of them start training to become stronger and set off to achieve Gon’s goal to find his father.
While this might not seem similar to Battle Game in 5 Seconds at first glance, the first Arc is about the hunter exams where the characters participate in mini-battles and show their wits & skills.
5. Killing Bites
Killing Bites is an ecchi anime known for its fanservice and gory, action-packed battle scenes. If you enjoyed this aspect of Battle Game in 5 Seconds, this is a must-watch anime for you.
In this anime, attractive scientifically created demi-human girls and more fearsome-looking demi-human males—who can completely morph into animals—fight to the death in a battle royale game.
4. The Future Diary
If you want to see a powerful girl-guy duo trying to beat ‘the game’, look no further than The Future Diary.
Amano Yukiteru is a loner and observer who finds himself frequently engaging in conversations with his imaginary friends―The God of Space and Time, Deus, and his servant. What a shock will Yuki experience when he finds out that Deus is a real God, proving it by granting him a Random Diary that can predict future events around Yuki.
Everything seems great until Deus decides that he will grant additional 11 diaries to the others as well. Deus has only one goal―the owner of the diary who manages to kill all remaining Diary owners will become God, replacing Deus who is about to die shortly.
The game “kill or be killed” begins.
3. Gleipnir
Gleipnir revolves around Shuichi Kagaya, an ordinary high schooler who lives in a boring little town.
One day, he finds his beautiful classmate in distress and somehow ends up transforming into a furry dog with an oversized revolver and a zipper down his back. He manages to save her but now the girl not only knows his secret but also wants to use him as a tool in the search for her missing sister.
Gleipnir and Battle Game in 5 Seconds have various characters that receive superpowers from a mysterious entity. After that, they are forced to fight in a death game if they want to survive. Both of them have a duo consisting of a beautiful high school girl & a boy.
2. Btooom!
Btooom! is another action anime that’s similar to Battle Game in 5 Seconds.
Ryōta Sakamoto is an isolated youngster who is also a NEET. He is the prime example of someone who lives only online, totally consumed by the games he plays. On top of that, Ryōta is considered to be one of the top players in a game called Btooom!
One day, he finds himself on a secluded island that is soon revealed to be a real-life adaptation of Btooom!, forcing him to fight and even kill others in order to survive.
In both these shows, the characters are trapped somewhere where they are forced to participate in a survival game whether they want or not. The male protagonist in both is a hardcore gamer and the blonde heroine who later teams up with him has an interesting backstory.
1. Darwin’s Game
The story revolves around Suou Kaname, a high schooler who gets invited to try out a new cryptic mobile app game called Darwin’s Game, but soon after realizes that there is no way to quit the game.
Notice the similarities yet? Darwin’s Game is basically a real-life battle royale game, just like Battle Game in 5 Seconds.
These anime are by no means isekai—they take place in the real world.
The characters receive special abilities and then are forced to participate in deadly battles.
In both anime, we are rooting for the main duo consisting of a cute blonde girl (waifu material) and a mediocre-looking boy who has a sharp mind.
“Darwin’s Game” and “Btooom!” deserved a sequel. These two are my all-time favorite Game-Based anime. You explained everything in a very detailed way. Thanks for writing this wonderful content.
Thank you 🤍
Unfortunately! Thank you for inventing a new look. I really appreciate this girl’s style, but I’m afraid there’s no longer a chance.
