How to Watch Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba in Order

It’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed by the many releases of Demon Slayer. But don’t worry, because I’ve got you covered with this comprehensive guide on how to watch Demon Slayer in order, which includes all of the released movies!

Demon Slayer is a Japanese manga series turned anime that tells the story of Tanjirou, a young boy whose family was brutally murdered by a demon. The only survivor is his sister Nezuko, who has been turned into a demon herself.

Consequently, Tanjirou sets out on a mission to avenge his family and find a way to turn Nezuko back into a human.

The anime adaptation by Ufotable that aired in 2019 was critically acclaimed, and the sequel film, Mugen Train, released in 2020, was a box-office success. The second season premiered in 2021, and now there’s a movie and TV series coming out in 2023 that dives into the Swordsmith Village Arc.

Unarguably, this series is one of the most popular anime shows right now. Fans often praise it for well-executed action scenes, stunning visuals, and waifu bait. The latter always seems to work.

In 2020, the Demon Slayer franchise generated an estimated annual sales revenue of $8.75 billion, becoming one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time.

So, let’s dive in and take a look at how to watch Demon Slayer in the correct order!

The last update was made on 03.10.2023 by Misaka to include the new Demon Slayer 2023 series & movie.

How to watch Demon Slayer in order (with movies)

ANIME TITLEAIRED
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (TV series)2019
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train (Optional)2020
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba 2nd Season [Mugen Train Arc + Entertainment District Arc] (TV Series)2021–2022
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba -To the Swordsmith Village- [Movie] (Optional)2023
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc [3rd Season] (TV series)2023

It is recommended to watch Demon Slayer according to the release order.

If you are asking whether you need to watch the Demon Slayer movies, the short answer is no. You don’t have to watch them at all.

The 1st Demon Slayer movie covers the same Arc as the first part of the 2nd season. This Arc is called the Mugen Train Arc.

As a result, you can either skip the 1st movie completely and watch only the 2nd season or you can alternatively skip the 1st part of the 2nd season called Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Mugen Train Arc and watch only the second part of the 2nd season, which is titled Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Entertainment District Arc.

A similar situation is with the 2nd Demon Slayer movie, as that movie is a mix of the end of the 2nd season—the Entertainment District Arc—and the extended first episode of the 3rd season (the new Swordsmith Village Arc). This means that you can skip only the first episode of the 3rd season if you’ve seen the 2nd movie.

If you are a hardcore fan, you might want to watch both movies and TV series. That’s completely up to you and your watching pace.

So, basically:

  • If you want to watch the Demon Slayer movies: Demon Slayer 1st Season → Demon Slayer – The Movie: Mugen Train (1st movie) → Demon Slayer 2nd Season (Entertainment District Arc) → Demon Slayer -To the Swordsmith Village- (2nd movie) → Demon Slayer 3rd Season (Swordsmith Village Arc)
  • If you want to watch only the Demon Slayer TV series: Demon Slayer 1st Season → Demon Slayer 2nd Season (both Mugen Train Arc and Entertainment District Arc) → Demon Slayer 3rd Season (Swordsmith Village Arc)

Just a heads up: the second season of Demon Slayer was split into two cours. The first cour is called Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Mugen Train Arc. The second cour is titled Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Entertainment District Arc, which continues the story after the Mugen Train Arc.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba (2019)

This is the first season of the popular anime series.

We meet Tanjiro whose family is almost completely annihilated by demons, with only him and his sister who has been turned into a demon surviving.

He is on a quest to avenge his family and turn his younger sister back into a human. To do so, he starts training under a retired member of the Demon Slayer Corps to become a Demon Slayer.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train (2020)

As we mentioned earlier, the Mugen Train movie is a direct sequel to the first season of the series, and it adapts the Mugen Train Arc. The movie is two hours long, so make sure you have enough time to enjoy it!

Tanjiro and Nezuko, along with Zenitsu and Inosuke, join one of the most powerful swordsmen of the Demon Slayer Corps, Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku, to face the demon aboard the Mugen Train, on track to despair.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba 2nd Season (2021–2022)

This season has two parts: Mugen Train Arc and Entertainment District Arc.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Mugen Train Arc

The first arc of the second season, known as the Mugen Train Arc, is basically a longer and slightly tweaked version of the 2020 movie we talked about earlier.

The arc was adapted into seven episodes, and some scenes were extended to improve the story’s natural flow when transitioning to the second arc.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Entertainment District Arc

If you’re a Demon Slayer fan, then you absolutely cannot miss the second arc of the second season. It’s called the Entertainment District Arc, and it spans across 11 thrilling episodes.

In this arc, Tanjiro teams up with Zenitsu and Inosuke to help the flamboyant Sound Hashira, Tengen Uzui, hunt down a demon that’s been causing chaos in the Yoshiwara red-light district. Get ready for some intense action and drama, my friend!

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba -To the Swordsmith Village-

The 2nd Demon Slayer movie retells what happened in Season 2 episodes 10 and 11 (which were called “Never Give Up” and “No Matter How Many Lives”), and then it moves on to the first episode of Demon Slayer 3rd season, which is part of the Swordsmith Village Arc.

All in all, this movie is basically a prequel to the 3rd season of Demon Slayer to allow a seamless transition from the previous season.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba 3rd Season (Swordsmith Village Arc)

Demon Slayer Season 3 officially premiered in Japan on April 9 at 11:55 PM JST on Fuji TV.

The first episode kicked off with a special one-hour broadcast, which is longer than the typical 22-minute runtime for the show.

As the title suggests, this season will focus on the Swordsmith Village Arc, and we can expect to see some epic battles and emotional moments as Tanjiro and his friends face new challenges and enemies. So buckle up and get ready for another exciting journey in the Demon Slayer world!

  1. The series is really good. I haven’t heard any filler complaints. I am curious to see the anime TV version of Mugen Train. The movie was awesome.
